Jake the Cat attempting to hide from the post-holiday doldrums. |
Four. More. Years. My current struggle? Figuring out how to resist this madness. And getting on a plane by myself, again. At least I produced a blog post.
My face is flushed from sitting out under a low, January sun and temperatures just above freezing. My hands are rough and cracked from an alternating barrage of dry inside heat, and frigid outdoor air. My mind is exhausted from several nights of broken sleep patterns, and anxiety surrounding an upcoming trip. And my soul is drowning beneath an onslaught of pettiness, bullying, and willful ignorance from the current President of the United States and his sycophants.
For nearly two weeks, fresh air and vitamin D have been absent from my daily routine. So, this afternoon, I brought out a chair from my kitchen, set it up on the patio, put on a headset, and listened to a few podcasts, while soaking up the meager rays of a winter sun. One focused on the importance of simple, but deliberate, practice when learning to draw. Basically, making a bunch of shapes every day for several weeks, will improve one's skill. And avoid worrying about perfection, or even being good. A lesson that I could apply to several other areas of my life. The other, concerned a grimmer subject: the grooming of young boys by straight men, and how society overlooks it. Yes, it happens, far more often than you think. The YouTube video was inspired by a recording of a famous rapper talking on social media to a fifteen-year-old influencer. I just want to point out to all the Moms Against Liberty, it did not involve a book.
That is all I am going to say for now. Progress comes from short, small steps done consistently. With this post, I have blogged at least once for every week in January.
It is the only way to get better at this thing called writing.
