Letters from a Middle-Aged US Citizen (#1)

Slips, not slides. Well, for the past two years, I have been sliding, especially when it has come to writing. The best way to get out of life skid? No, it is not leaning into it. Instead, do one small thing in the right direction. Nothing big or perfect. In fact, in this moment, "small and messy" is best. So, here is my life correction.

People constantly talk about being an American.

What are the most American things someone can do?

Protest, Resist, Stand Up, and Call Out

Seriously, study the decade leading up to the American Revolution, then both the Abolition and Civil Rights movements, followed by the entire history of class and gender struggles in the United States. Our liberties were always demanded and defended by activists and protestors.

What are the most American things the US government has done?

Silence, Suppress, Deny, and Deflect

Seriously, see Indian Reservations, the Fugitive Slave Law, and Jim Crow, then the Alien and Sedition Act and COINTELPRO, followed by the entire history of classism and racism in the United States. At every attempt to claim our rights, the government and its supporters have resisted.

The protestors in Minnesota, Maine, and a dozen other places across the country, are doing the most American thing ever.

And, the President, his current administration, and the majority party in Congress, continue the timed honored tradition of former US governments by attacking US citizens.

Because I love my country, care about future generations, and desire everyone to be free, I stand with the Patriots who are fighting against tyranny.

If you value any and all of these things, so should you.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
